THE GRID OF 9

I would like to research the correlation of physical and cultural displacement due to traveling with one’s own experience of him/herself. I will conceptualize a narrative that will hopefully capture an individual’s relation to space and environment but at the same time with the challenging conditions of having to move around as a traveler.

I would like to research and explore the possibilities of storytelling using virtual reality, augmented reality coupled with video game technologies to tell a story. I will explore this paradigm by applying film theories and altering them to fit the VR and AR domain.

I would like to research the experience of identity of third-culture kids (or third culture individuals—a term used to refer to children raised in a culture other than their parents', but at the same time having their parents’ heritage as a significant part of their developing years). I will conceptualize a narrative or game for other people to understand this struggle.

  • A game where the player will start out with building familiarity with a place and its rules. His home location will slowly be built and mirror what the player’s character looks like. Eventually, the player will arrive at a certain level and capacity for the decision to travel and leave the home location, only to realize that this pattern of morphing with the environment allows him to be a shape-shifter whose task is to stop shape-shifting and arrive at a permanent face/form.

  • A VR experience to visualize the changing of locations from all over the world, but also with character interaction with many cultures to simulate how one’s behavior changes within these situations.

A VR experience using film techniques that will feature the setting as itself the main character. This will take a lot of world-building but will explore what it means to have a place as a lead role in the story, meaning every detail to the VR design will contribute to the virtual world.

A cinematic video game experience where the player will have a setting to interact with, and the player will have the role of a filmmaker who needs to make a documentary out of the said setting.

Game to visualize the struggle of choices. I’m considering the use of color and perhaps how to collect all shades of a certain pigment from all over the world, where the player will have missions or tasks of having to earn and collect it from different cultures and different people. In the end, completing the spectrum of colors makes for a more colorful world.

An AR use of portals that will allow one to see how public space operates in different parts of the world in contrast to the one he/she is currently standing on. Like being in a Starbucks in New York and using this AR to see what Starbucks is like in Hongkong or in Egypt.
